what is real? what do I have my heart wrapped around?

…a few weeks ago, my nieces were visiting and there was an incident between Audrey, my 4 yr old, and my 4 yr old niece. There were pretend crowns and someone had taken someone elses pretend crown. There was crying of the most intense level over this loss. Someone(Audrey) was made to give back the crown and apologize for taking it. They then went on happily playing Queen of the princesses and Queen of the kittens.
I laughed heartily over this incident, as my mother relayed it to me (she was the one who worked out the return of the crown)…… and then felt the Spirit kicking me again. What are my crowns that I love dearly and cry to keep? They are not even real, what is real is my relationships….my Relationship with the one who wears the real crown.
What I learn in Kids Church
July 16th, 2010 by Kathi WinceI think that often we adults view the Sunday that we serve in Children’s Ministry as a Sunday that we “miss out” on the teaching and worship from the “big service”. I have found and I hope that we all find, that the Sunday we worship and learn with the kids is one that is just as enriching as our experience in the “bigger room”.
We are all God’s children, as an adult I can forget the “child” part. Being with the children brings it close to home. As an adult I can complicate things. In with the children, I can dwell in the reality of my own childhood in relation to my Father. He asks that I love Him and others…. trust Him….. obey His voice…… some basics that I can complicate with the fact that I feel somewhat in charge as an adult.
I realize that we, as adults, are giving of our time and energy to the kids when we serve in Children’s Ministry. But I realize more and more fully, we are not missing out on “church”, and our lil’ brothers and sisters have a lot to offer us in our spiritual lives as well.

When God speaks through your kid’s mouth
July 9th, 2010 by Kathi WinceGod reminded me the other day that He works most often in slow but steady ways. I was in a discussion with Emma about how she responds to her siblings. Does she use a “firm” voice or a loving and patient one? My complaint, as her parent, was that she was responding in anger and irritation. She said it was hard to change and I said that I knew it was, but that God would help her and we just needed to ask Him. I told her that He would be faithful to help her day by day to change her response. I went on to philosophy that God changes some things instantly but most of the time He transforms us, which happens over time. Emma asked what things He had changed instantly in me…….. that left me pondering. What had been changed in me instantly? or had most of the work that my Lord has done(is doing) in my life been a transforming work. Do I have patience for that same work in others, or am I expecting instant change? I hear you Jesus, but your voice sounds a lot like Emma’s.
